Tropical Awards and Upcoming Issues

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend the Locus Awards here in Seattle for the first time. Having heard of the Hawaiian shirt tradition—where attendees wear the craziest and most outlandish shirts that they can find—I knew what I was in for, but the combination of colors from hot pink to neon orange, not to mention the various prints, still managed to catch me off guard. Wow!

Not having worn a Hawaiian shirt, I was naturally out of place. Those of us who had chosen not to comply to tradition were each given a mark of shame. You could call it a scarlet letter, but it was actually many letters, and they made up the phrase, "I did not wear a Hawaiian shirt." This was especially important—how else would anyone have known that I arrived in such a visually un-stunning outfit? Still, properly attired or not, I had a lot of fun.

I also had fun getting this issue together, because I was getting August's issue together at the same time. I'll be leaving the country next week—well, leaving my country, anyway—and I'll spend the rest of July in Ireland. If you need me during that time, you should probably contact Bluejack, who will be taking care of things while I'm away and is much more likely to get back to you in a reasonable time frame.

In any case, I can safely tell you that both this issue and next month's have a lot of great content for you. You'll notice a few new names on the masthead—we've got a few new editors joining us and helping us to keep IROSF flowing smoothly. We look forward to the extra help and to the quality they'll bring to us.

Also, welcome back Rena and Yoon! Two of our past editors are coming back to IROSF and we're definitely excited to have them.

In other changes, you'll notice some Amazon Associates links around the site. We're still working on incorporating these into our design, so expect them to get more graceful and natural over time. As always, it's part of our never-ending mission of finding ways to to pay our authors for their hard work, which in turn gives us great content to pass on to our readers.

Speaking of you, our beloved readers, we wanted to point out that IROSF no longer requires a subscription to view—for now. We've been experimenting with ways to make our material more accessible, and this particular one has been a mixed blessing. More and more people are stopping by to read an article or two each month, but then there's the trouble of being forgotten about the following month. We'd like to invite you to sign up for the site, which is not only free, but also keeps you in the loop. You can comment on our forums and articles, becoming part of the conversation here. You'll also receive an email each month, letting you know that a new issue has come out. So take a moment and "subscribe." It's fun, you won't miss all the great stuff that's coming in August, and did I mention that it's free?

With that, welcome to July! We hope you enjoy it!

Publisher's Note: Stacey has been running IROSF quite effectively for over a year now. Stepping from logistical oversight deftly into a role of true ownership, Stacey's new title, Editor-in-Chief, is long overdue. Give her a round of applause!

As one of the contributors here who has dealt with many different editors at many different publications, let me not only add congratulations but note that it is a pleasure to work with Stacey.
